Concessions Impressions

A couple of concessions commendations are in order for the final home games of the school year.

First, I received an assist from Kyle Voskuil working the Roger Sandee Memorial Concession Stand at Cedar Grove-Belgium’s soccer playoff game on June 4.

My camera batteries were running low, but I was proactive. I brought my battery charger to work that morning and placed it right beside me on my desk.

And that is where it sat until it was time to leave for Port Washington’s soccer game late in the afternoon.

I think they say the memory is first to go, but I may have forgotten.

I made it through Port’s game and the first half of the Rockets’ game, but the power source was on its way to running on fumes.

At halftime, I asked Voskuil if I could borrow an outlet. He took my pack and plugged it in without question. What a guy!

Note: No hot dogs or otherwise heated food was delayed in the charging of these batteries.

Those few minutes of electricity were essential because the game — you could have seen this coming — went into overtime.

Gracie Schmidt saved the contest from being decided by penalty kicks with a last-minute goal. My camera, along with the cardiac health of most Rockets’ fans, was grateful.

At Grafton last Friday, a lack of electricity, at least the sky-faring type, would have been more welcomed. Storms delayed the Black Hawks’ playoff soccer game by four hours. It had already been moved from the grass field — and its shiny, brand new concessions and bathroom facility — to the turf of Kellner Field, which also offers exquisite accommodations.

I wondered if the concession stand would open.

Oh yes. The volunteers stuck it out and offered a full menu. A hot dog hit the spot, followed by some Now and Laters in keeping with the theme of the night. Everyone was ready to play now, but they had to wait until later.

It was playoff time, and more than our local high school athletes came through in the clutch.

As for my remembering to charge camera batteries, that will be addressed during offseason training.
