Working smoke detectors were the key to preventing injuries in an early morning chimney fire on Monday in the Town of Belgium.

A call to the Belgium Fire Department came in about 5:10 a.m. to report a fire at 6676 Silver Beach North.

Everyone, including pets, escaped the home without injury, Chief Dan Birenbaum said. No firefighters were injured.

He said the homeowners’ told him the first sign of trouble was when two dogs in the house were getting restless. Soon after that, the home’s smoke detectors went off.

The fire is believed to have been started by ashes in the chimney. A damage estimate wasn’t available, but Birenbaum said the house was still livable.

“It’s a good thing they had working smoke detectors,” he said.

The fire was extinguished with assistance from the Fredonia, Waubeka, Port Washington, Saukville, Cedar Grove and Random Lake departments.
