Calligrapher is artist for July at center

Delores Wrathall is the July artist of the month at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

Wrathall is a graduate of Mount Mary University, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in art therapy. She is also a member of the Calligraphy & Paper Arts Group and spent 16 years working as an activity specialist in senior living communities.

Her passion for art deepened as she discovered its power as an alternative form of communication for individuals who struggle to express themselves through words. Through her study of various artistic modalities, Wrathall has helped others explore their emotions, engage in self-reflection and develop creative confidence. She believes that helping others unlock their artistic potential continually inspires her own creativity.

“My creativity is the inner spirit that emerges when I concentrate on a subject,” Wrathall said. “I incorporate designs and stories from my culture into my work, often using birds, feathers, mixed media, calligraphy and watercolor. As the designs come together, it feels like dancing — experiencing the free movement and contrast of lines as they complement one another.”

Wrathall will demonstrate her work from noon to 5 p.m. on July 2, 7, 14, 21, and 29.

She will also teach Basic Calligraphy Strokes 101 from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 23. The beginner-friendly workshop will introduce participants to the art of italic script calligraphy. Students will learn how calligraphy pens create thick and thin strokes, practice the foundational movements of italic lettering and begin forming their own alphabet.

The fee is $55 for center members and $66 for nonmembers and includes all supplies. Participants will take home their own calligraphy pen and practice materials to continue developing their skills.

The center at W62 N546 Washington Ave. is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Tuesdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
