Calendar changes coming to a school near you

School administrators in Wisconsin know calendars often may just as well be written in pencil, with one of those giant erasers on standby.

This winter has been no exception for the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District. Last week’s snowstorm and record cold caused schools to be closed on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Those are the district’s only closures so far this winter.

“There will be adjustments to the district’s calendar. Our calendar currently identifies snow make-up days as days added at the end of the school year, meaning the last student day could very well be pushed back,” Supt. Jeanne Courneene said.

Given winter is far from over — many schools in Southeast Wisconsin closed during a rare snowstorm on May 10, 1990 — changes to the schedule have yet to be determined.

“I intend to examine all possibilities in terms of making up instructional hours after I know what February and March provide in terms of inclement weather,” Courneene said.

The School Board is slated to discuss the calendar at its meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
