Bernadine C. Brey

    Faith and family were Bernadine C. Brey’s priorities in life, being a devoted mother, grandmother and church volunteer.
    Mrs. Brey of Fredonia died on Sunday, July 15, at Cedar Grove Gardens in Cedar Grove. She was 86 and died one day short of her 87th birthday.  
    She was born to Bernard and Genevieve (Dehlinger) Liebe in Stevens Point on July 16, 1931.
    She met William C. Brey, a Korean War veteran, in the late 1950s, her son Mike said, and after a first date to a Milwaukee Braves game at County Stadium, they soon married on Nov. 28, 1959, in Junction City, near where they both grew up.
    They set up house for two years in Milwaukee until they moved in 1960 to Fredonia, where they lived and raised their six children. Mr. Brey was a science teacher at Brown Deer High School for 35 years while she was a homemaker, sometimes working part-time, her son said.
    Mr. Brey died on Oct. 17, 2007.
     Her community service including being a sacristan at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Fredonia for many years. She also was an active member of the Legion of Mary and Opus Dei.  
    She was an avid and talented quilter, donating several to local charities.   
    She was known for her generosity and was an enthusiastic Green Bay Packers fan who looked forward to Sunday Mass followed by hot ham and “the game.”
    Mrs. Brey is survived by her children, Mary (Tony) Schneider of Little Kohler, Christopher Brey of Pennsylvania, Patricia (Tim) Gump of Eau Claire, Edward (Dana) Brey of Eagle, Mike (Julie) Brey of Cedar Grove, and Kim Brey of Batavia, Ill.; grandchildren Maria (Mike) Thomas, Josie Schneider, Tony (Cassandra) Schneider, Veronica Schneider, Lauren (Jesse) Kirk, Olivia Gump, Zachary Gump, Kaitlyn (fiancé Dakota) Brey, Connor Brey, Madeline Brey, Natalie Brey, Jonathan Lunsmann and David Lunsmann; two great-grandchildren; and sister-in law Carol Brey, Wisconsin Rapids.
    In addition to her husband, Mrs. Brey was preceded in death by her brothers-in-law, Robert Brey and Gene Marzofka and sister-in-law Norberta Marzofka.
    A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, at Divine Savior Catholic Church, St Rose Chapel, Fredonia. Father Kevin Kowalske will preside. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Eernisse Funeral Home, Belgium. The rosary will be prayed at noon.
    She will be buried in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Fredonia.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials will be used to set up a nursing scholarship fund in Mrs. Brey’s honor.
