Belgium’s involvement in the state’s Connect Communities program led to a few new entertainment options this summer.

Summer Nights LIVE, a music, food and activities event, will be held three times starting on Friday, June 1 in Community Park.

From 6 to 9 p.m., two bands will perform. The blues and rock trio DocRube will be the headliner, and the traditional Irish band Tuesday Afternoon will open.

Festivities include a beer garden featuring Bofferding beer from Luxembourg, concession stand, bounce house and playground, a market featuring various vendors and kickball and cornhole games.

The Belgium Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the beer garden. The hosts on Aug. 3 will be the Cedar Grove-Belgium Broncos youth football team and Melvin Wester Belgium American Legion Post 412. The host on Aug. 31 will be the Belgium Lions Club.

Besides Summer Nights Live, a splash pad Sunday will be held on July 15, National Ice Cream Day. Drinks and ice cream will be available.

The live music and splash pad events were two of the most popular suggestions during a brainstorming session in March of about 20 community residents and leaders and businesspeople at the Connect Communities kickoff meeting.

“Both of these events are further supported by the branding work being done by our tourism committee, which has been focused on bringing more family-friendly events to our community,” Belgium Area Chamber of Commerce Marketing Director Tara Williams said.

Connect Communities is run by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. as a supplement to the Main Street program that works to support downtown redevelopment. Belgium is one of eight communities to join the program this year.

“I feel Connect Communities has been a real asset to Belgium already. Their training sessions have been relevant and educational, and the representatives from the program have been very helpful in giving us suggestions and unique ideas to aid in getting these programs started,” Williams said.
