The Belgium Town Board last month unanimously approved purchasing the compactor it has been renting from Advanced Disposal Inc.

The town is paying $7,000 for the equipment. It had entered a five-year rent-to-own agreement in 2014.

“To be very, very blunt, the reason we did a rent-to-own is because we didn’t have money to buy it,” Town Chairman Tom Winker said.

Money to buy the compactor is now in the budget, he said.

“It’s been refurbished so we feel it’s something very, very worthwhile,” Winker said.

The town had been paying $250 per month for the compactor and receiver box. The agreement was slated to go through September, which would have cost the town $9,600.

Any repairs the compactor may need will now have to be done by the town.

The town also extended its contract, set to expire in 2019, with Advanced Disposal through 2022.

“I think it’s just good business for us to try to keep it a little more current,” Winker said.

Advanced Disposal has asked to pass along some of the costs of recycling if the cost reaches $10 per ton. The cost now is $5 per ton.
