Belanger joins Hawks’ scoring elite

“Shock and excitement. I was so caught up in the moment,” she said.
Grzesiak called timeout and Belanger left the game, receiving high fives from her teammates and coaches. Fans held homemade signs congratulating her.
After the game, a 58-16 decimation (see page 12A), Belanger received a commemorative basketball and took photos with teammates, coaches, family and friends.
“It’s like such an honor I can’t even put it into words right now,” she said.
Grzesiak, in his second year as the Black Hawks’ head coach, said he is fortunate to have such a player.
“Her work ethic, how she stays in shape, doesn’t get hurt, a great student in the classroom — which is very, very important — and that she’s a model kid. She’s just ideal to have,” he said.
While Belanger can score inside or outside, she brings plenty of other skills.
“She can rebound, she can play on the perimeter. She can play inside offensively. Her defense — she’s had some games this year that she’s held the leading scorer for some teams to less than 10 points,” Grzesiak said.
“She’s the perfect person to build a basketball team and a program around.”
