The brainchild of a Cedar Grove-Belgium High School student has added a new element to the longtime rivalry with Oostburg.

Both high school bands faced off in the inaugural battle of the bands competition during halftime of the boys’ basketball game in Cedar Grove last Thursday.

The bands alternated performing different songs as they were reviewed by a panel of three judges, who agreed to the positions on the condition of anonymity, event coordinator Dave Claerbaut said.

Two judges claimed the match was tied, and the third gave the edge to Oostburg. Nearly half of the packed house cheered the announcement of the results.

Cedar Grove-Belgium senior band member Bailey Cooney came up with the idea and made a golden drumsticks trophy for the winning band, Claerbaut said.

“We really did get more excitement into the gym, pushed school spirit and showcased our incredible band programs. It was actually a lot of fun. We are hoping to make this an annual event,” he said.
