When it comes to preserving those long-cherished high school memories, Cedar Grove-Belgium High School stands out.
For the second year in a row, the school’s yearbook has received Jostens National Yearbook Program of Excellence Award, which calls for capturing a broad representation of the student body while developing communication and technology skills.
“We put a lot of work into it so it was nice to get it,” 2018 graduate Grant Lukens said.
The sharp cover, inspired by a vintage letter jacket, has been catching people’s eyes.
“It turned out better than I actually thought,” senior Karen Ibarra said.
Teacher Landa Paradise has a lofty standard for the keepsake.
“Our goal is (to have) every single student in the yearbook five times,” she said.
Students had to hit deadlines throughout the year-long process to create the book. Each student was responsible for two to four pages per quarter in the 156-page book.
Students learned real-world skills by approaching area businesses for support. Each student had to inquire at three companies.
“They’re doing things like collecting money, depositing it, selling ads,” Paradise said. “One of the things we’re really good at is selling ads.”
They’re also good at selling to their own target market, using emails, flyers and signs. They reached a 70% purchase rate.
The book covers all sports, clubs and activities and included a special insert for the girls’ soccer team, which advanced to the state final in June. The book was completed the week after graduation.
