Army canine handler is speaker on Nov. 20

Bob Batty, who served as a canine unit soldier during the Vietnam War, will be the speaker for the Monday, Nov. 20, meeting of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Military Historians.

The 6:30 p.m. meeting will be at the Rose-Harms American Legion Hall in Grafton.

Batty, who lives in Cedarburg, was drafted into the Army in 1969 and volunteered to be a canine unit soldier, preventing the Viet Cong from breaching a perimeter and attacking compounds.

Batty will discuss the demands that the training placed on soldiers and their dogs as they prepared for duty with the 981st MP Company Sentry Dog Unit.

Batty is a graduate of Northern Illinois University who served the Peter Wollner American Legion Post as commander and Wisconsin State commander in 2010.

Admission is $25, which includes the presentation and a buffet dinner. A limited number of $10 tickets just for the program are available.

Reservations are required by Thursday, Nov. 16.
