Agroforestry field day set for May 19

An agroforestry field day will be held at Riveredge Nature Center in the Town of Saukville from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 19.

The event is intended for landowners of all experience levels interested in growing food in a way that is sustainable and beneficial to wildlife and humans alike.

The day includes workshops, a catered lunch, social hour and plant giveaways.

The workshops include:

• “Agroforestry for Wildlife Conservation, Connection and Food” led by Matt Smith, who will discuss how agroforestry crops meld agriculture and ecological restoration to create more wildlife habitat and access to new food systems.

• “How to Hazelnut,” in which Savanna Institute will discuss the planting of native vs. new hybrid hazelnuts for production and enjoyment.

• “How to Heritage Apples” with Dan Bussey, who will discuss how to care for existing or inherited apple trees in disrepair and those that we are planting new.

• “How to Prairie” led by Smith will showcase planting and seeding strategies for acreages as small as a backyard corner and as large as “back 40” acres.

• “How to Elderberry,” in which Mike Breckel, owner of Ocooch Mountain Elderberries, will talk abut elderberry propagation for a bountiful harvest.

The fee is $55 for Riveredge members’ $65 for nonmembers and $30 for students and farmers.
