Port residents can expect a visit from the assessor

Port Washington property owners will be visited by the assessor beginning this summer as the city takes on a reassessment.

The Common Council on Tuesday approved a $219,000 contract with Associated Appraisal Consultants of Appleton for the revaluation, which will take place over two years beginning late this summer.

It will be a walk-through reassessment, with assessors inspecting houses inside and out.

The last time the city had a walk-through assessment was in 2012, Brown said.

At that point, the city was still recovering from the recession, officials said.

Familiar sirens to be silenced most Saturdays

Port Washington will become a quieter place on the weekends this spring.

That’s because the tornado sirens, which traditionally sound at 1 p.m. Saturdays, will only be tested once a month, Police Chief Kevin Hingiss told the Police and Fire Commission last week.

Hingiss told the commission that his decision came after Ozaukee County Emergency Management Director Scott Ziegler sent out a study recommending that emergency sirens be tested less frequently.

Port officials pan plan for Highway LL office building

The Port Washington Plan Commission didn’t mince words last week when members got a chance to review plans for an office building just west of the Country Inn & Suites on Seven Hills Road.

“The factory across the street looks nicer than this,” commission member Ron Voigt said, referring to Allen-Edmonds.

The building, intended to house Matt Nelson’s American Advantage insurance agency, is a metal structure that commission members said looks too industrial for the area.

Making off with the snow under the cover of darkness

Long before the sun rose Tuesday, Port Washington Street Department crews went to work cleaning up downtown after the first major snowstorm of the season on Friday night and early Saturday. Small loaders were used to push snow piled along sidewalks into streets, where it was plowed into rows. An industrial-sized snowthrower was then used to load a convoy of dump trucks that hauled the snow to the city yard on Moore Road.

Gales, record-high lake pummel Port

Record high January lake levels combined with gale force winds Saturday to create a rare and fierce storm that overwhelmed and damaged the Port Washington breakwater and threatened private property along the Ozaukee County coastline.

“Storms on the lake are nothing new, but we haven’t seen water this high. The combination caused a lot more damage and erosion than we’ve seen in the past,” Public Works Director Rob Vanden Noven said.

Design bids support $5 million firehouse estimate

After reviewing bids from firms interested in designing a new fire station for the City of Port Washington, officials said it looks like a new station can be built for the $5 million estimate.

“I definitely think it will be no more than that,” Fire Chief Mark Mitchell said Tuesday. “I think we’ll come in and get a good facility for under $5 million.”

Mitchell, who said many of the cost estimates are based on square footage, said he has talked to other fire chiefs and, given a competitive bidding environment, believes the cost could come in even lower.

Port State Bank purchases lakefront building

The Port Harbor Center along Port’s north marina slip was sold Wednesday to Port Washington State Bank, Bank President Steve Schowalter announced.

The bank purchased the 20,000-square-foot building, parking lot and green space from longtime owners Jim and Karen Vollmar and Don and Mary Ann Voigt.

The shopping center is directly east of the bank building and gives the bank an expanded footprint in downtown, Schowalter said — something that may prove vital as the business continues to expand.

Titletown book sells out in record time

Jim Biever’s book, “100 Years in Titletown: Celebrating a Century of Green Bay Packers Football,” sold out during the holiday season.

It was a record for Triumph Publishing, which had 10,000 copies of the book printed.

“They’ve never had a book sell out in 68 days before,” Biever said.

“It sure has been fun. I started out with the thought I wanted to bring joy to Packers fans, and I think I accomplished that.”

While the publisher’s warehouse is empty, a few copies of the $40 hardcover book may still be found in some stores.

Polar Bears warm up to new habitat

The Polar Bears move to Port Washington’s south beach on Jan. 1 was a success, club president Jon Crain said.

Plenty of people crowded the lakefront to watch the 123 registered Polar Bears jump into the water, Crain said, adding that the typical turnout is about 100 people.

Port council signs off on 6.8% sewer rate increase

Port Washington residents will find their water bills increasing this year.

The Port Washington Common Council on Tuesday approved a wastewater rate hike of about 6.8%, increasing the fixed rate 4.7%  from $30.46 to $31.90 and the variable rate 8.8% from $2.94 per 100 cubic feet to $3.20.
