New plants introductions have gardeners dreaming

Current issues of gardening magazines are full of articles about new introductions. That means new Heuchera, which to me look remarkably like many others already on the market, and new colors of Geum, Monarda and Dahlia, just as there have been every year over the last decade. There’s also a new silver and green Brunnera, ‘Jack of Diamonds,’ that’s a larger version of Brunnera ‘Alexander’s Great,’ which is a larger version of ‘Jack Frost.’ As Americans get bigger so do our plants.

Dennis Goldsmith of Port Washington may know Harrington Beach State Park better than anyone else.

He has served as a volunteer since 2002 and a few years ago was hired as a part-time employee.

“I don’t think there’s 10 square feet in this park I haven’t walked on,” he said.

One of his proudest accomplishments is the accessible cabin available to those with disabilities.

Knellsville 4-H inducts officers, honors members

The Knellsville 4-H Club had more than just the normal business to attend to when it met Nov. 3 at the Landt-Thiel American Legion Hall in Saukville. Albers named to board at Mel’s Charities Inc.

Elizabeth Albers of Cedarburg has been named to the board of directors at Mel’s Charities, Inc.

Albers, festival manager for Festivals of Cedarburg, has a strong background in theater and extensive experience in event planning and management.

“Elizabeth exemplifies the next generation of leaders who will sustain our mission as we continue to expand our reach and increase our impact in Ozaukee County,” board president Dick Phalen said.

Bostwick to give talk on Walk of Peace Nov. 18

Allon Bostwick of Port Washington will present a program on the battlefields along the Italian-Slovenian border near the Isonzo River, where 300,000 Italians and 200,000 Austro-Hungarians allied with Germany died in World War I, during the Monday, Nov. 18, meeting of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Military Historians.

The meeting will be at the Rose-Harms American Legion Post, 1540 13th Ave., Grafton.

Bostwick will present a slide show he compiled from the Walk of Peace, aka Pot Miru, in which he walked more than 180 miles all along the battleground in 18 days.

Popular diets to be topic for a Nov. 19 program

Popular diets are the topic for a 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, program at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton.

Dietician Amy Giffin will explore the pros and cons of such diet trends as paleo, ketogenic, Mediterranean, whole 30, anti-inflammatory and intermittent fasting.

The free program will be in the ortho conference room at the center, 975 N. Port Washington Rd.

Jessica Ramel and Steven Batterman became engaged on July 18, when he proposed at Mauthe Lake, one the their favorite places in Kettle Moraine State Forest.

They are planning a Sept. 26, 2020, wedding at Holy Trinity Church in Kewaskum officiated by Father Jacob Strand.
