Your Pix: In the lee of the breakwater

About the time Mike Keller took this picture from the bluff overlooking Port Washington’s outer harbor on Sept. 29, a National Weather Service buoy 50 miles east-southeast of Milwaukee was recording wave heights as high as 25 feet. The service reported that a weather system it described as a “truly windy autumn storm” produced north winds that blew as strong as 60 mph in gusts down the entire fetch of Lake Michigan, building enormous seas in the southern half of the lake. Near shore off Port Washington, the seas were not that high, but they were ferocious enough to make the lake untenable for small craft. Fishermen on the boat in the photo prudently stayed behind the protection of the breakwater.
