YOU PIX: Turkey vulture in repose

It’s rare to be able to get close enough to one of the turkey vultures that frequent Ozaukee County to take a photo like this one by Nancy Camden of Mequon, who spied the bird sitting on a tall cement silo in Belgium. Vultures spend most of their time airborne, using their six-foot wing spans to soar on thermals while using their keen eyesight to find the carrion that accounts for almost all of their food. In her note accompanying the photo, Nancy pointed out that vultures’ “heads are beautifully designed for rotting carcass cleanup.”
