The Feith Family Ozaukee YMCA has seen a lot of changes this last year — including upgraded day care facilities and 24/7 access.
Adding to that list will be renovated family locker rooms. The Y broke ground on the project Monday that is expected to be completed in November.
Funding for the remodeling came from a donation from Port Washington businesswoman and philanthropist Shirli Flack.
“The YMCA is a favorite place for me. It serves so many people of all ages. It is a true family place,” she said, adding that the family locker rooms are used by seniors, teenagers and families.
The family locker rooms have not been updated since the building was constructed in 1999. There are four private changing rooms with showers and restrooms.
With traffic from morning swimmers and youth classes, the locker rooms are often used, Y officials said.
CGI Construction of Germantown is doing the construction.
“Being a part of this family locker room renovation is truly an honor,” project manager Ryan Greene said. “The YMCA is a pillar of our community.”
Work on the locker rooms follows the Y’s plan of “not necessarily expansion, but updating,” Teri Kermendy, director of marketing and communications, said.
The YMCA has launched a capital campaign to address issues with the pool, weight room and fitness center.
“I’m excited to mark the first of hopefully many renovations to the facility,” Rob Johnson, CEO of the Kettle Moraine YMCA, which owns the Ozaukee YMCA, said. “Ensuring the continued growth, access and updating of facilities is a key component to the Y’s success.”
Last May, the YMCA went 24/7 as a way to retain members after suffering a 35% membership reduction during the pandemic.
Since then, 1,000 of the key fobs that allow access around the clock have been issued, Kermendy said, adding 100 of those were to new members.
A further increase to membership is expected from the under-construction Northern Gateway development abutting the Y.
The first phase of that project was approved by the Saukville Village Board this month, giving the green-light to the construction of 200 apartments.
The planned renovations will ensure the Y is equipped to accommodate the newcomers, Kermendy said.
Day care facilities in the building have been remodeled recently, expanding access to include children as young as six weeks.
The donation is one of many contributions to the Ozaukee YMCA by Flack, who supported a golf outing fundraiser in June.
“None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of the Shirli Flack family,” Johnson said about the locker room renovation. “Shirli has been a great supporter and benefactor of the Y. Her support continues with her commitment to youth and families with this remodeling project.”
