Town wants more details on Newburg fire charges

Officials ask department to clarify 2019 contract cost

Town of Saukville officials want to make sure they understand how the Village of Newburg Fire Department determines what to charge the town for fire protection before they agree to a 2019 contract.

“We’re looking for what is the formula they use,” Town Chairman Don Hamm said. “Some townships are based on assessed value. (Newburg) set a formula years ago and we just want to find out more about that.

“The question isn’t whether we’re being charged too much. The question is, is it being divided fairly” among the three communities the Newburg department serves, Hamm said, noting the other communities are the Town of Trenton in Washington County and the Village of Newburg.

The Town of Saukville paid the Newburg Fire Department $183,000 for coverage this year, the same as in 2017, Hamm said. The proposed contract for 2019 would cost the town the same, but the fee would increase the following year.

Fire department officials are expected to come to the Town Board in November to explain the formula they use.

The Newburg department is the only one the town contracts with, although the Village of Saukville Fire Department handles about half the fire calls. The Fredonia and Waubeka fire departments also respond to some calls, Hamm said.

“Newburg is the conduit to send the money to the other departments,” Hamm said.

The question came up when town officials looked at what other towns are paying and found that the towns of Belgium and Port Washington pay less than Saukville does.
