Not long after the Town of Belgium bought the compactor it had been renting, an ignition switch broke.

That cost the town $267.98.

Not long after it was replaced, it broke again, Supr. Tom Bichler said at Monday night’s meeting.

The switch is only used twice per day.

“It shouldn’t have failed in 12 times,” Bichler said. “Hopefully, there’s a warranty on it.”

Bichler said he is checking with Advanced Disposal Inc. the company from which the town bought the compactor, which will contact the company that makes the switch, he said.

The town in May bought the compactor for $7,000. It had entered a five-year rent-to-own agreement in 2014 when it didn’t have money to purchase it.

The town had been paying $250 per month for the compactor and receiver box. The agreement, slated to run through September, would have cost the town $9,600.
