It turns out the Town of Belgium isn’t paying for the ignition switch on its compactor.

The town decided to buy the compactor this year for $7,000 after renting it and a receiver box for the past four years. In 2014, it entered into a rent-to-own agreement for $250 per month with Advanced Disposal Inc. since the municipality didn’t have money at the time to buy the piece of equipment.

The switch was replaced once this year — still in the rental period — then broke again not long after the town bought the compactor.

“It shouldn’t have failed in 12 times,” Supr. Tom Bichler said of the new switch.

Bichler said at this month’s meeting that Advanced Disposal is picking up the $267.98 tab for a new switch.
