The Town of Belgium this month approved a 2022 budget that includes the first of two payments for a new rescue squad.

Residents unanimously approved a levy of $467,996 to support a budget of $660,110 that carries the 1.8% maximum state-allowable increase.

They also unanimously approved road expenditures of $318,892, down from 2021’s budgeted $383,000 mostly due to less paving work scheduled for next year.

The town spent $228,000 on paving this year after budgeting $191,000. It has budgeted $128,000 for next year.

The town’s portion of a $230,000 rescue squad for the Belgium Fire Department is $138,000. The budget includes a $63,000 payment toward its share.

The Fire Department had asked for a commitment from the town and village of Belgium — the two municipalities it services — to fund the rescue squad at its annual budget meeting in September.

The village had been saving money for the vehicle and agreed to pay its share, but the town hadn’t discussed the issue with its residents.

The Town Board agreed to help pay for the vehicle but wanted to discuss it at a Town Board meeting before making it official.

The issue was addressed at the October Town Board meeting and the handful of residents in attendance supported the purchase.

Nobody mentioned the rescue squad at this month’s town budget hearing.

The town is receiving $140,000 through the American Recovery Plan Act, but that money is not included in the annual budget.

The town already received $70,000 and expects to get the other half next year. It spent about $19,000 on heating, ventilation and air conditioning upgrades at the fire station.

It may use the ARPA money for the rescue squad, Clerk Ginger Murphy said.
