Spring series to delve into organic farms

An educational series exploring the importance of organic produce and meat will be presented by DreamPort Harvest Market this spring.

The three-session series, which kicks off on Feb. 21, will be given by local U.S. Department of Agriculture and Real Organic Project certified farmers.

The sessions will be held at the Port Washington State Bank Community Room, 218 E. Washington St, Port Washington, and can be viewed via Zoom.

“Prescription from the Apple Doctors: Eat Real Organic Fruit! “ will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Ed and Peggy Callahan will discuss the challenges and benefits of growing organic apples at Dream Apple Farm.

The Callahans are retired physicians who continue their health care mission by growing organic fruit for the community. They bought the Dream Apple Farm property in Port Washington in 2012 and have expanded the orchard to include more than 1,300 trees along with raspberry and rhubarb plants. All fruit on the farm has been USDA certified organic since 2017.

“Managed Grazing: Connecting Food, People, Animals, and Our Environment” will be discussed by Thelma Heidel-Baker of Bossie Cow Farm near Random Lake  from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 21.

Heidel-Baker will discuss the importance of how animals used for meat are raised and the importance of pasture-based farming for the benefit of people and animals, their health and natural resources.

Heidel-Baker is the co-farmer and co-owner of Bossie Cow Farm, an organic dairy farm, and works as a conservation planner for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

“Growing and Eating Organic Vegetables for a More Sustainable You!” will be discussed from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, by Caleb Trainor, who owns Winterspring Farm in the Town of Saukville.

He will explore the relationship between farming, health and the local food economy. 

Winterspring Farm is a certified organic, community farm specializing in traditional community supported agriculture and direct-to-consumer markets. Its core mission is to build a community rooted in localized, resilient mutual aid while practicing sustainable and regenerative growing practices.
