Saukville Saints come on strong late in season

The Saukville Saints adult baseball team nearly pulled off its third win of the year during the season’s final week.

The Saints haven’t won since late May, but on July 22 they nearly knocked off Brownsville on the road.

Down, 7-6 in the ninth inning, Cale Heinonen singled and Hudson Deal doubled, putting runners on second and third with one out.

But the 49ers got out of the jam and held on.

Deal had three hits in the game.

Both teams had a five-run inning, the 49ers in the third and the Saints answering in the fourth.

In the Saints’ big frame, Xavier Deal walked, Simon Bares singled and Steve Dickmann hit an infield single to load the bases. Blake Twito walked for an RBI and an error on an Heinonen grounder scored another. Hudson Deal had the big hit, a double that scored two runs. Alex Elenteny added an RBI single.

In the sixth inning, Twito led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to one run.

Heinonen started and went two-plus innings, allowing two hits, five runs and six walks while striking out one. Hudson Deal relieved, allowing three hits, two runs and five walks, whiffing seven in six innings.

On Saturday, the Saints were sunk at Cedarburg by the Mercs’ six-run sixth inning. The Mercs won, 12-8.

The Saints scored in four innings, starting with two runs in the third. After Hudson Deal was hit by a pitch, Elenteny clocked a two-run homer.

In the fourth inning, Twito singled, and moved to second on an infield out. Brandon Wojciechowski singled him home to tie the game at 3.

The Saints scored three runs in the fifth inning. Alenteny doubled and Xavier Deal followed with an RBI double. Dickmann had an RBI single, and Twito doubled and Brendon Zimdars knocked in one run with a single. That gave the Saints a 6-5 lead.

The Mercs scored six  runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with five being unearned. With two outs and nobody on base, Troy White homered. An infield error allowed the inning to continue, and the Mercs racked up five straight singles and two walks to take an 11-6 lead.

In the eighth, the Saints scored two more runs. Nathan Huntley and Hudson Deal each singled. A Xavier Deal force out followed by a wild pitch scored one run, and Bares had an RBI single.

Heinonen allowed five runs (four earned) and four hits in four innings, walked eight and struck out five. Jim Hintz allowed six hits and six runs (one earned), striking out one without a walk in 1-2/3 innings. Hudson Deal allowed one hit, one run and four walks while striking out one in 2-1/3 innings.

Deal and Alenteny each had three hits.

On Sunday, the Saints lost to the Thiensville-Mequon Twins at home, 6-0.

Xavier Deal, Brian Hirschinger and Chase Kroening had the Saints’ three hits.

The Twins scored four runs in the fourth inning. Cade Berendt had a two-run double and Ryan Quello and Easton Oliver each had RBI singles.

Wojchiechowski allowed six hits, five runs and three walks while striking out three in four innings. Twito allowed four hits, one run and three walks while whiffing five in five innings.

The Twins’ pitchers racked up 15 strikeouts.

Aiden Trusky allowed two hits and a walk while whiffing six in five innings for the Twins. Fletcher Filla allowed one hit while striking out six in three innings, and Vince Cameranesi struck out three in one inning.

The Saints finished 1-15 in the Rock River League and in last place. They were 2-15 overall.
