Riveredge hosting slew of events

Riveredge Nature Center in the Town of Saukville is holding events during the next few weeks for nature lovers of all kinds.

• The Ozaukee Washington Bird Coalition’s program “Three Billion Birds Lost — and What To Do About It” will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Mequon Nature Preserve and via Zoom.

Jackie Augustine, executive director of Audubon of Kansas, will lead the discussion on why American bird species are in decline and what can be done about it.

Some species have declined more than others. Augustine will explain trends in the data and share ways to prevent further losses.

• “Stroll with a Naturalist: Butterflies” for adults will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 11.

Butterflies and other elements of nature will be explored.

The program is free but donations are appreciated. Register by 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, July 10.

• “River Rambling” for children and their parents and grandparents will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, July 12.

A naturalist will lead the way into the Milwaukee River to seek out creatures that live there.

People are asked to bring wading shoes such as old sneakers, a towel and change of clothes. They may pack a snack and stay for a picnic after the program.

The event is for children ages 5 and older. They must be accompanied by an adult.

The cost is $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

The registration deadline is noon Thursday, July 11.

• “Yoga and Mindfulness in Nature” for adults will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13.

Samantha Olson of SOYO Studios and a Riveredge environmental educator will teach ways to infuse movement and mindfulness.

A 45-minute beginner-friendly slow flow will be followed by 45 minutes of meditation and hands-on exploration.

It will include a 3/4-mile hike. People are asked to dress for the weather.

The cost for members is $15 and for nonmembers is $20.

The registration deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, July 12.

• The Neurodiverse Disability Nature Group will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13.

Any adult who is neurodivergent or has disabilities is welcome to connect to a community of others navigating a similar world who enjoy experiencing the sensory calm of nature.

Riveredge has an all-terrain wheelchair through Access Ability Wisconsin.

The program is free. Register by 4 p.m. Friday, July 12.

• “Diving into the Blues,” including local music history and the Delta Blues’ workshop and presentation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 16.

Local guitarist Luke Cerny will present an interactive demonstration and workshop focused on techniques of early American acoustic guitar styles.

He will discuss artists such as Charley Patton, Skip James and Son House.

Guitar players may bring an acoustic guitar, capo, tuner, slide and other accessories.

The session is designed for people 14 and older who are beginner to advanced guitar players. Teens must be accompanied by an adult.

The cost is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers.

Register by 4 p.m. Monday, July 15.

• “Growing Green Farm Tours: Riveredge Permaculture Farm” will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17.

A guided walk will be taken through Riveredge’s four-acre permaculture farm. People will learn about what happens to the vegetables and the sustainable habits that can be used in gardens.

All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The fee for members ages 12 and older is $10; the fee for nonmembers is $20.

Members ages 2 through 11 are $5 and nonmembers are $10.

Register by 11:55 p.m. Tuesday, July 16.

• Summer Plant ID and Management will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, July 19.

People will be taught to understand native and non-native plants and how to manage them.

Riveredge Director of Research and Conservation Matt Smith, who has more than 22 years of ecology experience, will be the instructor of the session.

The program is for people ages 14 and older. The fee for members is $30 and the cost for nonmembers is $35.

Register by 11:55 p.m. Tuesday, July 16.

•“Yoga and Mindfulness” for adults will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18.

Instructor Mary Addy will lead a beginner/intermediate-friendly yoga flow for 45 minutes, followed by a 45-minute guided hike.

The cost for members is $15 and for nonmembers is $20.

Register by 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, July 17.

• A geocaching adventure will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, July 19.

People will use a GPS unit to find hidden caches during a two-hour hike.

GPS units will be provided. Participants should be able to hike for long as two miles.

The program is for children ages 8 and older. They must be accompanied by an adult.

The cost for members is $8 and nonmembers is $10.

Register by noon Thursday, July 18.

• “Cooped Up Naturalist” will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20.

A Riveredge naturalist who has been cooped up in the coop near Farm Pond will discuss everything he has learned about the landscape. Seasonal nature objects such as pelts, bones, stones, dried plants, seeds and branches will be explored, and people may check out an ID book for a hike.

All ages are allowed. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The program is free, but donations are appreciated. Registration is not required but is helpful.
