Port Washington police, fire department open houses

At this year’s Port Washington Police and Fire Department open houses on Sunday, Oct. 13, a new Fire Department initiative and demonstration — “Close Before You Doze” — will be rolled out, Fire Chief Mark Mitchell said. Department members have been working to construct a demonstration, a mock up of two bedrooms, one with its door closed and the other with it open, and a hallway where a fire will be started. The fire department open house, held in conjunction with Fire Prevention Month, begins with an all-you-can-eat pancake and egg breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $6 in advance or $7 at the door. Children younger than 5 eat free. Advance tickets may be purchased at Sharbuno’s Jewelers and Fat Boys Bait and Tackle. The “Close Before You Doze” demonstration will be held mid-morning. Other activities during the open house include equipment demonstrations and rides on a fire engine and the aerial truck basket. The open house ends at 1 p.m. The Police Department open house, which also runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., includes tours of the station, the Department of Transportation smart trainer and offers visitors the chance to try “beer goggles,” which show those wearing them what it’s like to walk while drunk.
