One new board member assured in no-contest election

Barring an unexpected write-in campaign, there will be no contested races in the Saukville area for the spring election on Tuesday, April 2.

However, there is one newcomer expected to join the Saukville Village Board once the votes are counted.

Longtime Trustee Joseph Caban, who was first elected to the Village Board in 2009,  will not be on the ballot.

Running unopposed and likely to take Caban’s place is Andy Hebein, a member of the village’s Community Development Authority and Industrial Review Board.

Hebein moved to Saukville with his family in 1982 when he was 6. He graduated from Port Washington High School in 1994.

Hebein moved to Milwaukee while attending University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and returned to Saukville in 2003, where he lives with his wife, Michelle. They have three children.

Hebein, 42, is a human resources manager with We Energies and was formerly on the board of the Feith Family YMCA in Saukville.

“Being a member of this community and raising my family here, I kind of feel compelled that I continue to help it stay a safe and prosperous community,” Hebein said in explaining why he is running for office.

His main interest as a trustee, Hebein said, will be on business development.

“That’s why the CDA intrigued me, to help bring good employers and employees to the area,” he said.

Hebein said his top priority is to become more familiar with the village budget and the budget-making process.

“I haven’t had much exposure to it. That’s something I want to come up to speed on pretty quick,” he said.

Hebein said he hopes to continue serving on the CDA but hasn’t looked closely at the other committees and isn’t sure on which ones he will serve.

Caban is a member of the Library Board, cemetery commission, Finance Committee,  Public Safety Committee and Public Works Committee.

Caban said he decided not to run again due to work commitments and a decision to go to school to earn his emergency medical technician certification. 

Village President Barb Dickmann, who was first elected to the office in 2003, is running unopposed. Also unopposed are trustees David Maglio and Richard Belling.

In the Town of Saukville, four incumbents will be unopposed on the ballot. 

They are Treasurer Gloria Arrendondo, Town Board Chairman Don Hamm and supervisors Michael Denzien and Curt Rutkowski.

All village and town seats are at-large.
