NOSD parking lot project receives state recognition

The concrete parking lot on the Northern Ozaukee School District campus was recently recognized by the Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association at its 38th annual Concrete Design Awards  in Madison.

Also honored were the project’s concrete supplier, Schmitz Ready Mix; its contractor,  Mark Cardinal Concrete Construction; and the architect/engineer, Bray Architects.

The awards are designed to showcase best uses of ready-mixed concrete in Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Award winners were determined by a panel of Wisconsin/UP educators and construction professionals.

NOSD Supt. Dave Karrels called the parking lot “a success story of converting an asphalt parking lot to concrete after the design process” related to the 2018 school building referendum.

“The general contractor was adamant that concrete would be too expensive” but was persuaded to solicit bids, which came in “very competitive” to those for asphalt, Karrels said.

“The school district realized the long-term benefits and value of concrete over asphalt.”
