Movies, gardening and more offered at library

The Niederkorn Library in Port Washington is hosting programs on everything from caring for dahlias to nuclear energy during October.

“Caring for Dahlias over the Winter” will be discussed by Jon Westphal, a 20-year member of the Port Washington Garden Club, at 6:30 p.m.  Monday, Oct. 7.

Westphal, who has been growing dahlias for 18 years and has sold more than 800 of his plants since 2015, will shares tips for helping dahlias make it to spring.

This is a hands-on workshop, so those attending should bring their questions and your gardening gloves.

 “Cultivate Mental Wellness: A Community Conversation Series” will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10.

The talk, hosted by Port Conversations and Cultivate, will center around the wealth of mental health resources available to those in Ozaukee County.

“Yesterday,” a PG-13-rated movie, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11.

The movie follows Jack Malik, a struggling musician in an English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading. After a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Malik wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed.

The Writer’s Block club will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 14.

The group offers gentle critiques, technical aid in writing and technology and suggestions for publishing goals in a safe and open-minded environment.

The group meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month.

Tips for living well will be offered at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, by certified health education specialists Hannah Grobelny and Valerie Grimm from the Washington Ozaukee Public Health Department.

The women will discuss how movement and nutrition play an important role in your ability to live well.

“The Future of Nuclear Energy” will be discussed by Paul Wilson, professor of nuclear engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17.

Wilson’s research focuses on developing improved tools for computational modeling of complex nuclear energy systems, with applications in radiation shielding, nuclear waste management, nuclear non-proliferation and energy policy.

Board Game Day will be held from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.

The theme will be Games of Moonlight and Mystery and the games on hand will include Gloom, Lucidity, Mysterium and King of Tokyo.

Participants may also bring their own board games to play with others, and they need not stay the whole time.

Minor children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants are asked to use the entrance on Grand Avenue.

“Short Stories, Tall Pints” will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28,  at Inventors Brewpub, 435 Lake St..

This will be the last “Short Stories, Tall Pints” of the year.

The library at 316 W. Grand Ave. is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.
