Memorial Day commemoration canceled

Belgium won’t hold its annual parade and ceremony to commemorate Memorial Day on Monday due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Leaders of the Melvin Wester Memorial American Legion Post 412 decided to cancel the events “to meet current and future guidelines and to protect the health and safety of those who would attend,” post Financial Officer Bill May said in an email.

A firing squad will conduct military honors at 11 a.m. Monday at Village Park to honor those who died in defending the United States. The squad will leave immediately after the military honors are given.
