Port Washington police are investigating what Harbormaster Dennis Cherny said was an isolated act of vandalism at the marina when four boats were untied from their moorings early on Friday, July 24.

The boats, including three sailboats, were tied up on the south side of the channel near Rotary Park.

In at least one of the cases, the men sleeping onboard woke to the sound of the boat scraping against the rocks, police said.

The incident was reported to Port police at 3:10 a.m.

Cherny said none of the boats were damaged.

In addition, police said, 14 fishing rods were removed from the charter boat Nicky Boy II that night.

Divers managed to find three of the rods in the water under the boat the following day, police said.

Cherny said the marina has not had many issues with vandalism, and noted that the marina cameras didn’t pick up any issues when the incident occurred.

The marina has two cameras, Cherny said, one that shows the lake conditions for sport fishermen and the other that shows the launch ramps.

“We’re looking at putting some more up,” he said.

He is looking into getting at least three or four more cameras that would cover the parking lot, entrance and views throughout the marina, Cherny said.

“It woud certainly be a deterrant and also as a follow-up for police if something does happen,” he said.

Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to contact the police at 284-2611 or text the information anonymously to Tip411.
