A 20-year-old man has been charged in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with robbing a Cedarburg bank last week, then fleeing with the help of an unwitting getaway driver.

Milwaukee resident Solomon Moburg, whose mother lives in Cedarburg, is charged with robbery of a financial institution as a repeat offender because of his criminal record, which includes an escape conviction.

According to a criminal complaint, police officers were called to the Port Washington State Bank branch on Washington Avenue in Cedarburg at 3:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, for a report of a robbery.

Witnesses said a man wearing a blue bandanna face mask entered the bank and demanded money with “no dye packs,” referring to devices that are hidden in money and explode, staining stolen money and the thief.

The robber then told bank employees in an aggressive manner to get away from the teller station, took money out of one of the teller drawers and left the bank, heading south on Washington Avenue.

Surveillance video from a nearby business showed a man wearing what appeared to be the same clothes as the bank robber in the business shortly before the robbery. Officers, who knew Moburg from previous encounters, recognized him as the man shown in the video, the complaint states.

Officers interviewed an acquaintance of Moburg who earlier that day picked him up in West Bend, where he recently served a jail sentence, drove him to his mother’s house in Cedarburg so he could pick up money and then was told by Moburg to park in an alley close to the bank and wait in the car until he returned, according to the complaint.

The acquaintance told police that about 20 minutes later, Moburg jumped in the car and said, “You gotta (expletive) go. The cops are coming,” the complaint states.

The driver said Moburg showed him money that was in his backpack, gave him $300 and told him to take him to Target in Grafton, according to the complaint.

Surveillance video from Target shows that Moburg entered the store at 3:30 p.m., bought a cell phone charger and a variety of gift cards, including ones for Lyft and Uber, with cash and left the store at 6:51 p.m.

Moburg was arrested and in custody as of Wednesday, Dec. 18.

He is being held in the Ozaukee County jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.

According to court records, Moburg was convicted of felony escape in Washington County in March and sentenced to eight months in jail. He also has several misdemeanor convictions in both Washington and Ozaukee counties.
