Man charged with gun crime after traffic stop
A 39-year-old Saukville man who is prohibited from possessing firearms because he is a felon is in trouble with the law again after he was pulled over with a handgun in his vehicle.
In addition to possession of a firearm by a felon, Daniel D. Petz was charged last week in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with two counts of felony bail jumping and misdemeanor counts of operating a vehicle after his driver’s license had been revoked and violating a court order by not having an ignition interlock device installed on his vehicle.
Petz, who was convicted of fourth-offense operating while intoxicated in Dodge County in 2020, was free on bail in a fifth-offense OWI case in Sauk County at the time of his latest arrest.
According to a criminal complaint, an Ozaukee County sheriff’s deputy pulled Petz over on Saturday, July 22, in the Town of Cedarburg after running the license plates of his vehicle and learning he did not have a valid driver’s license.
Petz told the deputy he was moving items from a storage shed to his sister’s home and acknowledged that his license had been revoked and that he had not installed an ignition interlock device as he had been ordered to, the complaint states.
When the deputy asked if there were guns in the vehicle, Petz said there was a firearm in the trunk, which is where the deputy found a .40 caliber Beretta handgun and three loaded magazines. A box of full metal jacket ammunition was also found in the trunk, according to the complaint.
During a July 24 court hearing, Ozaukee County Circuit Judge Sandy Williams set bail for Petz at $7,500 and ordered him to maintain absolute sobriety, not to drive and not to possess firearms while the case is pending.
Court records indicate Petz has posted bail.
