LETTERS: A child learns from adults at a Donald Trump campaign rally

To Ozaukee Press:

In news clips of Donald Trump’s recent campaign rally in North Carolina, I saw children in the audience.

I noticed a girl over Trump’s left shoulder who appeared to be a pre-teen.

When the adults began chanting “send her back,” she looked up to the adults on both sides, seemingly puzzled about what has happening and wondering what to do.

Within a few seconds she caught on to the chanting and joined haltingly, not really knowing what the words meant, I think.

The behavior of the adults reminded me of the lyrics of a song in “South Pacific” written by Oscar Hammerstein: “You have to be taught before it’s too late, before you are six or seven or eight, to hate all the people your relatives hate.”
