LETTER:People who didn’t ask to live in industrial zone are stressed
To Ozaukee Press:
Port Washington is facing a mental health crisis that too many of our leaders refuse to acknowledge. The Vantage Data Centers construction has brought constant noise, bright industrial lighting, truck traffic, dust and previously five months of 24-hour disruption of the daily lives of residents. People across the city and town are reporting anxiety, sleep loss, stress and a sense of being pushed past their limit.
This is not hypothetical. This is happening right now in our neighborhoods, homes and families; to parents who can’t sleep, to children who feel unsettled, to seniors who feel forgotten, and to everyday residents who never asked to live inside an industrial zone.
What makes this situation even more painful is the lack of meaningful response from the people elected to protect us. People have asked for help, acknowledgment, a basic plan to support those who are struggling. Instead, they’ve been met with vague statements, shifting information and the message that if they need mental health support, they should pay for it themselves.
And let’s be clear: This anxiety did not appear out of nowhere. It is a direct result of decisions made by the city and town, and the extraordinary freedom given to Vantage to operate with minimal transparency. Residents have been asked to absorb the impacts of a massive industrial project while being kept in the dark about basic information.
If our leaders truly care about the people they serve, then they must act; not with more reassurances, but with real solutions. Port Washington needs a publicly announced mental health support plan specifically for residents affected by construction related stress and the ongoing anxiety surrounding future noise and air quality impacts. The city and town should be partnering with local mental health providers to offer no-cost counseling sessions for those who are struggling. There should be a dedicated hotline or point of contact for residents experiencing anxiety, stress or disruption related to the project.
We also need transparent, consistent communication about construction schedules, noise expectations, lighting changes and environmental impacts.
And finally, the city and town must commit to evaluating and adjusting construction practices when they are causing documented harm to residents’ well-being. These are not extreme demands; they are the bare minimum any responsible government should provide when its own decisions are contributing to communitywide stress.
The people of Port Washington deserve leaders who recognize that mental health is as real and important as physical health. We deserve leaders who respond with compassion, not dismissal. We deserve leaders who act before a preventable crisis becomes a tragedy. It is time for our local officials to wake up, step up,and finally show that the well-being of residents matters more than the convenience of a corporation.
