LETTER: Vos in hazmat gear is symbol of GOP assault on voting right
To the Ozaukee Press:
As of last Friday, there were 40 Covid-19 cases reported among people who voted in person at Wisconsin polls. I believe this will prove to be only the tip of the iceberg. Followup testing is ongoing and multiple cases from additional voters and spin-off contacts will no doubt be uncovered over the next few weeks.
The Republican refusal to postpone the election was unconscionable on its face. It has already resulted in multiple illnesses and will in all probability soon be tied to deaths.
This decision was made callously and with malice aforethought. Make no mistake about it, Fitzgerald and Vos forced this on the citizens of Wisconsin knowing full well it could result in suffering and very possibly death, and did so for nothing more than their own petty partisan gain.
All other scheduled state primaries were postponed because of the obvious potential dangers to voters. Only Wisconsin voters were put so recklessly at risk.
After years of voter suppression and gerrymandering, Republicans have finally added direct intimidation and genuine physical affliction to their assault on Wisconsin elections.
I can only hope the incredible image of Assembly Speaker Robin Vos wrapped in full hazmat PPE at a polling station remains seared into the memory of every Wisconsin citizen as we cast our ballots in the fall.
