LETTER: Two pools and the lake make Port great place for swimmers
To Ozaukee Press:
We in Port Washington are fortunate to have both the indoor District Aquatic Center (located in Thomas Jefferson Middle School) and the park and rec Pirates’ Hollow Water Park on Webster Street. Programming at both facilities serves so many needs, not only lessons and teams.
A leisure/exercise/entertaining bargain venue, the outdoor pool provides more than a sunshine playground. For six weeks this summer, adults could swim laps for nearly two hours at sunrise Tuesdays and Thursdays under the watchful, wide-open eyes of Charles DeMerit, who would also suggest individualized workouts if requested. Wednesday and Saturday mid-mornings, parents and grandparents accessed the shallower end of the pool with tots only, a calm, welcoming atmosphere for small children growing accustomed to the joys of water.
In addition to lessons, the District Aquatic Center offers afternoon and evening open swims, early morning laps, deep-water walking, plus two different types of aquatic exercise group classes. Accommodating personnel help newcomers get acquainted with the facility.
We count ourselves grateful to live in a community that values swimming and water-sport year ‘round, not just in late summer when our beautiful Lake Michigan is perfect for a dip.
