LETTER: Sinykin: Politicians should not intrude in women’s health care

To Ozaukee Press:

  When women’s reproductive health care is mentioned, most people think primarily about abortion. I want to expand the subject to include other aspects of women’s reproductive health by telling my story.

Miscarriages end 25-30% of pregnancies. Many need immediate medical intervention. When Wisconsin reverted to an 1849 ban on abortion, some physicians were afraid to handle miscarriage complications.  Wisconsin has court cases pending. This is not a settled issue in Wisconsin.

  My personal story affects 3-5% of pregnancies. I was 29 years old, married and teaching when I had an ectopic pregnancy. Surgery was performed. Thank goodness the OB-GYN did not hesitate for fear of governmental interference. Because I got the proper care, I could go on to have my children. 

  We must continue to protect the future of women’s reproductive rights in Wisconsin. I wholeheartedly support Jodi Habush Sinykin for state Senate District 8. Jodi states that “reproductive rights are human rights and decisions about pregnancy and health care should be made by women, not by far-right politicians in Madison.”

  You will hear a lot from Republicans about supporting women and children after birth. The truth is Republicans in the Legislature blocked extending Medicaid coverage for postpartum care to 12 months. Wisconsin and Arkansas are the only states not to pass the extension. 

  Please be thoughtful on Nov. 5 so that our daughters, granddaughters and nieces have the comfort of knowing their reproductive health care needs are private between themselves and their doctor.
