LETTER: Shame on Trump for making our faith a political weapon

To Ozaukee Press:

Recently former President Trump exhorted, “Christians, get out and vote.  Just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore, you know what? Four more years, it will be fixed, it’ll be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians.”

This action goes way beyond his calls to destroy democracy. Now his demand to co-opt the Christian religion (which many of us love and try to follow) is attempting to destroy both our religion and our democracy.

So many of us are so tired of our faith being used as a weapon against others and a tool to gain power. True Christianity encourages kindness, love and wisely using the brains God gave us to thoughtfully live our lives and make appropriate choices, including participating in our nation’s governing.

Urging us to vote without thought for a would-be dictator is not Christian or patriotic. Our country was purposely created to enfranchise all without a national religion (or a distorted view of one) so people of all faiths can live together peacefully, avoiding religious persecution and tyranny.

Shame on Trump for trying to evoke such a crude power grab. No wonder our young people continue to move away from organized religion, when it’s hijacked and wrongly portrayed in this way.
