LETTER: Remember Jan. 6 as ‘attack on our country from within’

To Ozaukee Press:

Remember Jan. 6 and save our Democracy. Historians will remember it right alongside the 9/11 attack on the U.S. by terrorists. They’ll draw connections with the collective trauma experienced when Japan attacked and nearly obliterated our naval base at Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7,1941.

The Jan. 6 insurrection will be compared to April 12, 1861, when Confederate troops fired the first shots of the Civil War to undermine the integrity of our sovereign nation.

For 246 years, our country has accommodated give and take between two

opposing political parties. Every election has produced winners and losers, but the pendulum was always allowed to swing away and then back toward the center.

The rule of law and checks and balances have always served our country well

until one poor loser chose to subvert the will of the people. “The Nov. 3, 2020, election was the most secure in U.S history,” according to the then-serving federal election officials, including Trump’s own, U.S. Department of Homeland Security secretary.

We all witnessed the undermining of our democracy through yearslong efforts

to delegitimize our government institutions and the electoral system. Those

efforts led up to the insurrection and they will continue until they are halted by a united voice and vote to save our democracy.

Please remember Jan. 6 for what it was before we were told a thousand times over to ignore what we saw with our own eyes —an attack on our country from within.
