LETTER: Protest critics: Recall that our  democracy started in protest

To Ozaukee Press:

A letter to the editor recently published in Ozaukee Press complained about people shouting “this is what democracy looks like” at the local protests against Trump’s policies.

About 10% of the protesters are veterans. Is the letter writer saying we can only lay down our lives for you but not protest for the truth for one hour for the benefit of all citizens?

If you are at a ball game you can boo or yell in support of each of the teams. Should we stop that also?

Let’s not forget the first American protest against a king and a dictator. It was called the Boston Tea Party. It’s what started our country working toward a democracy.

We are not protesting the vote count but Trump’s reckless policies for air quality, medicine and tariffs and cuts to education, air traffic controllers, nuclear scientists, clean water scientists, public health workers, workers on farms, construction, parks, school loans, forestry service, forest fire fighters and for pardoning Jan. 6 insurrectionists.

I’ll be out on the street again protesting with my veteran friends while people like the letter writer drive by and give us and democracy the one finger salute. We are trying to save democracy. What have they done for America?
