LETTER: As a polyglot nation, hate and mass shootings are our destiny

To Ozaukee Press:

Mass shooting is a canker this country will always have to suffer through. The roots are in the nature of its makeup.

Every other country in the world is made up of a vastly major single ethnic group. Japan almost all Japanese. Germany almost all Germans. Italy almost all Italians. And so it goes. This close relationship lends a certain stability to the population as a whole that discourages individual outbreaks and out-of-the-norm actions. There is little reason for them. But not here.

We are a polyglot of ethnics in an atmosphere of active freedom, a mixed bag in which there will always be room for the most extreme anomaly, the most violent individual.

The knee jerk reaction of the shallow thinkers is gun control. This probably wouldn’t do much harm, but it wouldn’t do any good. Scathing hatred running this deep will find the means. And the condition will get worse as we split more and more into our self-interest groups.

At one time, most people were interested in the welfare of the country. Not any longer. We are now a conglomerate of self-interested individuals scrambling to promote our own private interests. We are now willing to put our country at risk rather than see our opposition succeed. This atmosphere only spreads the canker.

Whatever happened to, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country?”
