LETTER: Musk’s aid shut down hurts world’s poor and shames U.S.
To Ozaukee Press:
Out of all the attacks on our government orchestrated by Elon Musk and his team of hackers, the most egregious is their assault on USAID.
Musk’s accusations, ranging from claims of excessive spending to the assertion that $8 million went to political causes, are baseless and misleading.
In reality, USAID has made significant improvements to lives worldwide. Their efforts include providing food relief, combating the spread of cocaine, educating girls and ensuring access to health care, all of which are far from trivial.
From a more self-interested perspective, it’s worth noting that out of the
food aid the U.S. provides, $2 billion’s worth comes from American farmers. Halting these shipments could either bankrupt these farms or lead to an oversupply.
Moreover, by showcasing our generosity and commitment to fostering stability
in these regions, USAID effectively counters Russian and Chinese influence.
The recent pandemic underscored that we cannot isolate ourselves to prevent the spread of infections; USAID has worked to mitigate those threats right at their source.
The fascism adjacent Elon Musk’s insatiable thirst for power is the real issue.
Over its history, this program has saved 26 million lives globally. During the recent suspension of the agency’s activities, people are already dying.
How anyone cannot be disgusted over this is baffling.
