LETTER: Local tavern, not open border, involved in fentanyl crisis here

To Ozaukee Press:

A letter to the editor by Wisconsin’s U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany in last week’s Ozaukee Press, “Grafton fentanyl death shows consequences of open border,” blames Biden for the fentanyl crisis. Tiffany did not mention the reports on that crisis by the Drug Enforcement Agency, Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection.

According to those reports, most fentanyl smuggled into the U.S. is in vehicles driven by American citizens through ports of entry, tractor-trailer trucks and passenger vehicles. Homeland Security and Border Patrol agents report fentanyl is not smuggled by migrants seeking asylum.

Fentanyl seizures occur at ports of entry from American citizens, foreign travelers and commercial trucks.

Republicans like Tiffany have sought to link fentanyl deaths with migrants who have entered U.S. custody. Is Tiffany’s letter meant as a distraction from State Rep. Rob Brooks’ potential political woes?

Fentanyl hospitalizations and death have been reported locally. Fentanyl sales took place at the Railroad Station tavern in Saukville. Brooks is the owner. Experienced owners, managers and workers must certainly know what happens in their establishments. Drug users know their sources. The Associated Press reported that an undercover informant said a patron regularly sold drugs at the bar.

Brooks suggests fentanyl is a Milwaukee problem, but it is in his backyard. Like gun control, drug issues in Gov. Evers’ budget have been cut by the Wisconsin GOP Assembly.

U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman advocates solving the fentanyl problem with fines and imprisonment. Not sure if his GOP ally Brooks got the message.

Business owners have been held responsible for their establishment’s mistakes with hefty financial compensation. Brooks did not respond to reporters’ attempts for answers.
