LETTER: If enough voters demand less government, we might get it
To Ozaukee Press:
All of government seems flawed and unstoppable in growth. I can offer an example.
I’m planning to build a retirement home. I’m not a contractor by trade but I’m qualified. I’ve been working to get permits for this house since last November and still do not have all I need. I’m required to work with the town, county, state and federal governments.
Will those layers of government ensure that I have a well built and safe home?
They probably will, but a smaller government might issue one permit at the most local level and provide advice on where to look for the codes and a warning that code compliance will be required. I would still be required to pass inspections.
The result would be less hassle, fewer government employees, less government office space, less need for costly advice for citizens and very likely the same outcome. Wouldn’t it be nice if housing were also more affordable?
Examples like this are common. I know, both parties seem to keep adding layers of government to “help us live better lives,” but liberal governments do seem to add more. Conservative representative are more likely to consider smaller government part of their goal.
If enough of us demand it, I really do think we can make a difference. At the very least we will know we tried. Please vote on April 2—it does matter.
