LETTER: Deb Andraca can help counter GOP damage to environment

    I like to fish. Because of that, I value the aquatic habitat that supports the fish I catch. I sailed on Chesapeake Bay for many years and lived on our 40-foot sailboat while sailing the East Coast and the Bahamas for three years. Now, I enjoy the beauty of Lake Michigan from our balcony.
    A lake or river is an ecosystem consisting of all the plants and animals in its watershed. What happens miles away eventually finds its way into our lakes and streams. A healthy Wisconsin environment means a healthy economy, as outdoor recreation generates over $18 billion in revenue here every year.
    Historically, Republicans have not been good stewards of the environment, and being able to pull fish into a boat does not make a legislator a conservationist. I am referring to the Republican incumbent in the 23rd Assembly district.
    The past several years, Wisconsin Republicans have passed legislation that allows the destruction of thousands of acres of wetlands, allows high-capacity wells to drain our water tables and lower inland lake levels, and passed legislation that increases green algae blooms in lakes.
    Republicans prefer to sell off public land that provides access for anglers and hunters and that protects important habitat. Currently, the nefarious Republican schemes include undercutting the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, which is the main way Wisconsin acquires and maintains public lands, including many we enjoy in Ozaukee County.   
    If you fish, you should be concerned about the entire system. I hope our children and grandchildren will have the chance to fish as I do.
    Deb Andraca, running for the 23rd Assembly District, is a true conservationist. She will work diligently to protect the lakes and rivers where we fish, play and hunt. I urge you to vote for Deb Andraca in November.
