LETTER: College official’s sex scandal reveals the stupidity of porn

An article recently on the front page of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel related the story of former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow. He and his wife created sex videos, sometimes with adult film stars, and posted the videos on pornographic websites. Gow has been on paid leave while UW-La Crosse officials move to revoke his tenure.

   Reading this article, I was reminded of the quote of a Jesuit priest professor of mass communications who spoke at Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles when I attended graduate school there in 1974.

    The subject of pornography came up during his presentation, and with a big smile, the professor said to us students, “Old pornos never die. They just smell that way.”

    He added that we firmly believe that sex is sacred and created that way by the God we believe in. Sex is a source of good for people who treat it with great respect.

    Therefore, in my view, both in and out of the pew, I want to emphasize the stupidity of pornography, which takes one of God’s most wonderful creations and completely defiles it. In my opinion, the best way to treat stupidity is to ridicule it.

    That professor back in 1974 ended his presentation by repeating his quip and asking us students to say it with him: “Old pornos never die. They just smell that way.”
