LETTER: Bike trail rough spots can’t wait for distant repair plan

In the City of Port Washington, a well maintained section of the Ozaukee Interurban Trail winds through the heavily wooded Valley Creek Corridor. In some other areas of the trail (right), the pavement is in poor condition. Ozaukee Press photos
To Ozaukee Press:
It was great to read that the Ozaukee Interurban Trail is going to be repaved, but having to wait four years for it is simply unacceptable. Many sections of the trail are in terrible shape.
Grafton is the worst with many large cracks and slumps. The path near the
Grafton swimming pool is so uneven that I would not let a child ride on it. North Avenue over the railroad tracks has large gaps between the road and the rails that are a danger to spoked wheels, not to mention the jarring effect on the rider or the possible loss of control. The north end of First Avenue is so alligatored and potholed that I wonder how much damage is caused to even the cars that travel it.
The trail between Sunset Road and Portview Drive in Port Washington has deep and widening cracks that pound the rider. The path north of Port is so filled with potholes that the constant lookout for them makes for an unpleasant ride, especially when the contrast between sun and shade hides how deep they are. Some extend the width of the path.
This is the trail that Ozaukee County advertises nationally. Guests are going to be sorely disappointed with their experience on the trail in its present condition. If the paving cannot be done this year, major maintenance needs to take place over all of the uncomfortable and dangerous areas.
