LETTER: Abandon north beach, invest in beach famed for flamingos

Jagged concrete and stone unearthed by winter storms make the entrance to the north beach difficult to the point of being hazardous. It would not seem to be a major project to remove the impediments or cover them with sand. Ozaukee Press photo
To Ozaukee Press:
Hearing that Port Washington’s South Beach Road will be designated as Flamingo Road is pleasant news.
Let us use that as a springboard to making the south beach area a gateway to our lakefront. Perhaps a local artist can fabricate a flamingo sign for the beach entrance. We can then include some flamingo news in our tourism ads. The novelty of it will get tourists and residents alike talking Port Washington.
A more serious part of this is to stop dumping wasted dollars on Port’s north beach. We are not going to beat Mother Nature here. Make north beach a “nature beach” with minimal maintenance. Let’s be honest here, just getting to the north beach is a project. Traversing around the wastewater treatment plant is less than ideal. The financially responsible thing to do is to abandon the money pit to the north and improve our south beach area.
We should cut into the hill along Flamingo Road and add a retaining wall. This would allow for angle parking of 40 or more additional vehicles.
Perhaps the city can partner with businesses and civic groups to build bathrooms. We have the opportunity to make this a jewel of our lakefront. Let us be more than just a boat harbor.
