KUDOS: Native American history came to life at Saukville Rendezvous

To Ozaukee Press:

The fourth annual Crossroads Rendezvous at Peninsula Park in Saukville had beautiful weather, amazing experiences and the best school day we’ve ever had. We’d like to thank our sponsors, beginning with the Saukville Chamber of Commerce, whose generous tourism grant makes our event possible, as well as OMEGA Industrial Products, Port Washington State Bank, Saukville Feed Supplies and Johnson Centrifugal Technologies and U-Haul Moving & Storage.

Thanks also to our volunteers from Port Washington High School and Saukville Boy Scouts from troop 866/6868, who helped run our gate and deliver ice to our participants, as well as Mary Metz, our school liaison, and her helpers, who managed our school groups. Finally, thanks to the Saukville Police Department and Dan Helm and his crew at the Department of Public Works for all of their hard work.

Visitors enjoyed fry bread made by the Saukville Area Historical Society and bison burgers by Boy Scout Troop 840 of Grafton. Students on school day were treated to an amazing performance by the Bear Clan Singers & Dancers, a Ho-Chunk group from the Wisconsin Dells area, as well as experiencing baggataway (lacrosse) and other Native American and 18th century games and activities.

We were exceedingly disappointed that the Port Washington-Saukville School District chose to have a staff professional development day on the same Friday as our school day, which took a significant number of students out of our event. We hope the school district  will plan its schedule with the Crossroads Rendezvous in mind in the future.

The Crossroads Rendezvous is a fundraiser for the Saukville Area Historical Society. We are proud to have this unique event to help tell the story of the Crossroads, which is also the story of Saukville. With continued support from the community, the Rendezvous will return on the third weekend in May in 2024.
