Hypnotism, magic shows on long list of library events

 A hypnotism demonstration and magic show are two of the many events at Grafton Public Library in July.

A presentation by Mrs. Kim’s Amazing Animals for children as old as 11 will be held in the library’s lower meeting room from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, July 15.

At the event, the library’s lizard and other animals will be presented.

On Wednesday, July 17, hypnotist Paul Knight will perform a demonstration before answering questions in the library’s lower meeting room from 6 to 7 p.m.

Knight has performed hypnosis for more than 40 years.

A magic show with magician Great Scott will be in the library’s lower meeting room from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 24.

The “Chopped: Crafting Edition” event in the lower level meeting room invites crafters ages 12 to 18 to compete in designing unique creations from a mystery set of supplies from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, July 8.

Registration is required.

The Grafton Library Book Club will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the upper level meeting room.

The featured book for July is “The House in the Pines” by Ana Reyes. Copies are available for check out at the library.

The club is led by reference librarian Karl Suechting.

On Friday, July 12, the “Princess Storytime” event at the lower level meeting room will allow children 5 and younger immerse themselves in the world of fairytale characters with the Enchanted Storybook Company from 2 to 4 p.m.

Artistically minded teenagers ages 12 to 18 can create a tote bag from a recycled t-shirt in the upper level lounge from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16.

Participants are asked to bring their own T-shirt and registration is required.

That same day, William Schmitz, the Grafton Police Department Community Liaison, and a representative from the Interfaith Caregivers will present “Scam SINGO,” an interactive program packed with tips and techniques to combat scams.

The presentation will be in the upper level meeting room from 3 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16.

The Readers of the Night Book Club will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18, in the upper level meeting room.

The book for June is “The Alice Network” by Kate Quinn.

There will be a family movie showing at the lower level meeting room from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18.

A writer’s workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 20, in the library’s lower level meeting room.

The workshop is open to area writers interested in novels, short stories and fan fiction. The group offers encouragement, critique and creative feedback to writers, who are encouraged but not required to bring 1,000 words of their work to share.

The movie “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” will be shown at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, in the lower level meeting room.

The movie is rated PG-13 and runs 115 minutes. Those attending may bring snacks.

The monthly neuroscience club led by researcher Isaac Hou will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 27.

Hou leads the club in an exploration of a broad spectrum of subjects on human behaviors as well as disorders such as Parkinson diseases, dementia and Alzheimer’s, addiction, autism and psychiatric disorders.

On Monday, July 29, a “Puppet Storytime with Mr. Dan” will be hosted from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the Storytime Corner in the library.

Mr. Dan, a retired school counselor, uses stories to teach children problem solving and emotional skills.

The program is for preschool to kindergarten-age children.

Also on Monday, July 29, an event to  create a DIY reading nook will be hosted in the upper level meeting room for teenagers ages 12 to 18 from 3 to 5 p.m.

All materials will be provided.

A seminar on financial literacy by a representative from Concordia University  Wisconsin in Mequon will be in the upper level meeting room from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31.

The program will explain how to budget, how to save for an emergency fund, how to pay down debt, how to set financial goals and how to improve your credit report and score.

Self-care make-and-take bags are available while supplies last from Monday, July 29, to Wednesday, July 31.

Each bag includes materials to create a DIY spa experience.

A family storytime will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. It includes two to three stories, songs, action rhymes and other activities.

Toddler storytime will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays, July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

It will feature stories, repetitive rhymes, fingerplays, music and movement to promote the development of language and early literacy skills for children as old as 3.
